The Covenant College softball team took on No. 8 Belhaven for its first home conference doubleheader on Monday. The Blazers proved their ranking by run-ruling the Scots in both games.
Game 1 Final: Covenant 4, #8 Belhaven 24 Seven hits, four errors, and three walks led to 13 runs for Belhaven in the first inning. The Blazers hit a grand slam and a 3-run homer in the big inning.
Mary Elaine Mitchell drove in Olivia Stefl with a RBI single in the bottom of the frame to put the Scots on the board.
Belhaven added a run in the second inning via a RBI groundout. The run was unearned.
Six more runs, highlighted by a 3-run home run, pushed Belhaven's lead to 20-1 in the third inning.
A RBI single followed by a bases-loaded walk made it 22-1 in the fourth inning.
Belhaven scored its 23rd and 24th runs of the game in the fifth inning via a RBI single and a RBI fielder's choice. Madison Taylor knocked a 2-RBI single to right field to give Covenant some offense in the fifth inning. The next batter was Kathleen Carpenter and she delivered a RBI single to right field.
Covenant was outhit 18-6. The Scots committed six errors while Belhaven committed two.
Taylor Murdock, Valery Baxter, and Mackenzie Kirby all pitched for Covenant.
Game 2 Final: Covenant 1, #8 Belhaven 13 A single up the middle put the Blazers ahead 1-0 in the first inning. An error led to four unearned runs for Belhaven in the second inning. The third inning was Belhaven's biggest of the game, scoring seven runs on nine hits to make it 12-0. The Blazers scored their final run of the day on a RBI sacrifice fly to left field. Bailey Johnson crushed a home run to left field for Covenant's only run of the game in the fourth inning. It was the first of her career.
Covenant moves to 0-4 all-time against Belhaven. Belhaven outhit Covenant 13-3. The Scots committed four errors while the Blazers committed none. Lauren Edgar and Madison Bowden pitched for the Scots.
Covenant takes on St. Olaf in a doubleheader on Friday starting at noon.
