The WoodSongs Dalton Concert Series will feature award winning songwriters Scott Jackson and Kate Neal on Saturday, April 26, at 7 p.m. Regional bluegrass band Spatial Effects will open.
Review for the performers:
Scott Jackson, originally from Florida, moved to northwest Georgia in 2024. Growing up in a musical family he was exposed to bluegrass at a very early age. His songs reflect a variety of influences and his original songs branch out into the genres of folk, Americana, and bluegrass. Scott won first place in the Will McLean Festival songwriting competition in 2021 and first place in the folk category at the 2024 Cohutta Song Fest as well as the People’s Choice award. He was a part of the central Florida music scene for many years and he continues to play at venues and festivals around the country.
Kate Neal, winner of the 2024 Cohutta Song Fest songwriting competition, is a high school sophomore from Lookout Mountain, Ga. She was also a winner in the youth category. When asked when she began writing songs, Kate jokingly replied, “It may have been in utero when my parents (folk/rock duo Jennifer Daniels and Jeff Neal) were playing concerts right up to the delivery date.” Her musical influences come from a variety of sources including Noah Kahan, Olivia Rodrigo and Lizzy McAlpine.
Opening for Jackson and Neal will be the northwest Georgia based bluegrass band Spatial Effects. During their 25 year plus existence, Spatial Effects has performed at Riverbend, Chattanooga Nightfall, the Alabama Egg Festival and numerous festivals, county fairs, and churches from middle Georgia to southwest Virginia. The band has opened for Claire Lynch, Becky Buller, the Lovell Sisters and Goose Creek Symphony.
The concert will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, 101 S. Selvidge St. in Dalton. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., music starts at 7 p.m.
Proceeds from the concert will benefit the DEO Clinic, a non-profit 501(c)3 with the mission to provide free health care to low income, uninsured residents of Whitfield and Murray Counties. Matching donor funds up to $2,500 per concert will be provided by Modern Woodmen of America. Concert goers are also encouraged to bring a canned good or non-perishable food item for the Little Pantry maintained by the Presbyterian Church.
