Bertie Lou McMurtrie
Bertie Lou McMurtrie, 101, of Flintstone, Georgia passed away peacefully August 16, 2025.
Bertie Lou was born in Menlo, Ga., to the late James M. Daniel, Sr. and Louise Biggers Daniel. She moved to the Flintstone area as a child and resided in Chattanooga Valley for 90+ years.
Bertie Lou graduated from David Lipscomb College and loved teaching school at Chattanooga Valley Elementary and Boyd Buchanan Schools. She later worked as administrative assistant for Congressman LaMar Baker. She then worked in banking for many years.
Bertie Lou was a beloved lifelong member of the St. Elmo Church of Christ where she will be greatly missed. She served as teacher, secretary, and willing worker for many years.
Bertie Lou was always willing to help and joined the Pilot Club and served as local president, District Governor, and was a frequent speaker in the Southeast area. She made many life-long friends along the way.
She was preceded in death by husband, George W. McMurtrie, Sr. and brother, James M. Daniel, Jr. (Ruth).
Bertie Lou will be deeply missed by daughter, Sandra Locke (Wayne–deceased) and son, George (Chip) McMurtrie, Jr. (Kathy); loving grandchildren, Lisa Johnson (Allan), Michelle Locke, Coleman Locke, Melissa McMurtrie (Keith Vaughn) and Patrick McMurtrie; great-grandchildren, Daniel Coleman Johnson and Allyn Michelle Johnson.
A special thanks is extended to Hearth Hospice for their compassionate care, especially nurse, Anna and Steve. Also remembering caregivers Earlene, Tonya and Tammy.
The family will receive friends from 3–8 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 20.
The service will be held on Thursday, Aug. 21, at 11 a.m. in the funeral home chapel.
