The Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum in association with Tennessee Overhill Heritage Association is offering the Hiwassee River Rail Adventure starting this weekend and continuing for the next two.
For the first time in over 10 years, the “Old Line” of the former Louisville & Nashville is open again to passenger rail excursions.
Officials said, "Take a 26-mile, 2-hour roundtrip rail excursion from the mouth of the Hiwassee Gorge to the TVA Apalachia powerhouse and back (please note that the Hiwassee Loop portion of the railroad is not included in this trip.)
"Tracks along this route parallel the Hiwassee River for its full length providing breathtaking views of the lower gorge. Passengers will not detrain at the powerplant."
Tickets are by reservation for specific trains only. However, each train is open seating so that you may fully enjoy the experience and features reclining coach seats with large windows, it was stated. Vintage enclosed climate-controlled coaches will be pulled by 1950's era diesel locomotives.
TVRM’s mid-train commissary car will have snacks, beverages and other light food items available for purchase. Food items are not included in the ticket price. The commissary car also includes a souvenir counter with unique railroad items offered for sale.
Steve Freer of the TVRM said, "This could be the last opportunity to view the lower gorge by rail as the railroad may not be kept in service for much longer."
All seats are $29 for everyone age 3 & up (general admission.) Shuttle buses will depart the L&N Depot in downtown Etowah and deliver you to the train and then return you to the depot following the trip.
Trains will run Saturdays May 15, 22 and 29, at 9 a.m., 11 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., and Sundays, May 16, 23 and 30, at 9 a.m., 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., although some dates and times are sold out. Please check availability before ordering tickets.
Reservations are now being taken. To check availability or purchase tickets, download and complete an order form found at www.tvrail.com. Return via mail or fax, or call 423-894-8028 during Monday-Friday business hours.
