CENTRAL, S.C. - Coach Henry Moyo and his Flames ran into a band of fired-up Warriors at Southern Wesleyan University on Wednesday evening. For the third time this season, the Lee University soccer team had to settle for a tie in two overtimes.
The Flames had to battle for their lives to leave SWU with the 3-3 outcome. "They came out all fired up and very intense," said coach Moyo. "They jumped out to a 2-0 advantage and we had to play catch-up most of the evening."
Lee also had to play several minutes without the services of starter Rory McKay. The freshman picked up two yellow cards and had to leave the match. The Flames were forced to play the remainder of the rugged Southern States Athletic Conference contest a man down.
Nick Odeny scored one goal for the Flames and senior Stanley Nyazamba picked up the slack and tallied a pair of scores to help insure the tie. Lee again played without Ricardo Pierre-Louis and Joseph Connor.
The Flames had a wide margin in shots and shots on goal (18-11). Southern Wesleyan fired only eight shots, but five were on target and three landed in the back of the Lee net. Luis Ramirez, David Paul and Tyson John scored the goals for the Warriors.
The tie leaves the 16th ranked Flames at 5-2-2 in the SSAC. They are 12-3-3 overall. SWU stands a 4-2-2 in conference action and they will try to tie the Flames for third place in the SSAC when they tangle with Reinhardt College to close out the regular season.
Next up for the Flames will be conference action. They will host a match next week with a time and opponent to be announced later.
