Corine Cameron Welbon, 100, of Chattanooga, peacefully died on Tuesday, April 29, 2008 while at home with her family.
She served as a foster mother, bible teacher, beautician and an advisory council member for Chattanooga Public Schools. In 1983, The Honorable Corine Welbon was appointed Colonel by former Tennessee Governor Lamar Alexander. She was one of the few women allowed to enter the oval office to protest the Equal Rights Amendment during the Carter Administration.
She was a longtime member of the Ridgedale Church of Christ and was known to be a “walking Bible."
She was preceded in death by her husband, Cornelius Welbon; parents, Ada (Cunningham) and Phillip Cameron Sr.; and siblings, Phillip Cameron Jr., Elijah Cameron, Jr., Lovejoy Cameron, Elijah, Sr. and Jasper Cameron, Mary Cameron, Marie (Cameron) Render and Carrie (Cameron) Johnson.
She is survived by her daughter, Willena Welbon (David, Sr.) Woods; grandchildren, Jasmine and David Woods, Jr.; three siblings, Waverly Cameron, Sr., Addie Mae (Cameron) Anderson, all of Chattanooga and Alberta (Cameron) Jones of Trotwood, Oh., a host of other relatives and close friends.
Funeral services will be on Saturday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Taylor Funeral Home with Brother John R. Taylor, Sr. officiating. Burial will be in Southview Cemetery in LaGrange, Ga.
Her body will lie in state on Friday after noon at the funeral home.
