Jackson, Harvey Douglas "Doug" (Dalton)

Harvey Douglas “Doug” Jackson, 86, of Dalton, GA, died on Friday, October 11, 2013 at Hamilton Medical Center. 

He was the son of the late John Walter Sr. and Sybil Durham Jackson; and was also preceded in death by his 1st wife, Kathryne Burnette Jackson; his brothers, John Walter Jackson Jr, Ralph Jackson and Wilton Jackson; and his sister, Marian Jackson Bowman. 

Doug was a proud veteran of World War II, Korea and the Vietnam War with 23 years of service in both the Navy and The Coast Guard. He served on an Aircraft Carrier in the Pacific Campaigns during World War II, then on the U.S. Edisto “to the ends of the earth” until retirement in 1972 as a Senior Chief Petty Officer (R.M.C.S.). He was a member of the Dalton First Baptist Church where he served faithfully as a deacon and Sunday School Teacher. One of his proudest moments was when The Horizon’s group named him their Poet Laureate. 

Doug is survived by his wife, Norma “Burma” Jackson of the residence; sister, Rebecca Jackson Silvers (Ralph) of Vierra, FL; a dear cousin, Marlin Lund of Dalton; his children, Terry Jackson of Murfreesboro, TN, Donna Grow (Lynn) of Dalton and Yvette Cochran (Anthony) of Resaca; step-children, Tate Dixon (Von) and Laurene Lovingood all of Dalton; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. 

Funeral services will be Tuesday, October 15 at 2 p.m. at the Dalton First Baptist Church with Dr. Bill Ireland, Dr. Billy Nimmons and the Rev. Phillip Cannon officiating. Burial will follow in Whitfield Memorial Gardens. 

The family will receive friends in the atrium and Doug will lie in state on Tuesday, October 15 from 12-2 p.m.

The family asks that flowers please be omitted and memorials be made to the Dalton First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 827, Dalton, Ga. 30722-0827.
