World War II, Korean Veteran Worked 30 Years For TVA

Melvin Barnes, age 85, of Chattanooga, died Thursday, August 22, 2013.    


Mr. Barnes was a veteran having served in the United States Navy during World War II and Korea. He retired from TVA after 30  years of employment.  Mr. Barnes was a longtime member and deacon of MeadowView Baptist Church.  He enjoyed golf and bowling.  He was proud of the fact that he  bowled a “perfect game.” 


He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 50 years, Christine Simmons Barnes; brother and four sisters.

He is survived by son, Kent (Jill) Barnes of Chattanooga; daughter, Dr. Kristy (Tri) Barnes Le of High Point, North Carolina; son, Paul (Chas) Barnes of Chattanooga; five grandchildren, Jameson Barnes, Garrett Le, Jacqueline Le, Abrielle and Addison Coleman; two brothers Euell and Malcolm Barnes; several nieces and nephews.


A Celebration of Life Service  will be held on Tuesday, August 27, at 1 p.m. at the Valley View Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with Rev. Al Miller officiating.  Interment will be in Chattanooga National Cemetery. 


The family will receive friends on Monday, August 26, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.  Memorial contributions may be made to MeadowView Baptist Church, 10709 Ooltewah Georgetown Road, Georgetown, Tennessee 37336.
