Former Teacher At GPS Was Consummate Hostess And Entertainer

Hilda Hude Chapin passed away peacefully at her home on Thusday, Oct. 23, 2014, surrounded by loving family and companions.

Born in Pittsfield, Ma., on Jan., 10, 1924, daughter of Walter Seban Hude and Clara Troxell Hude, she and her sister, Phyllis Hude Mills, moved to Lookout Mountain as children. Mrs. Chapin graduated from Sweetbriar College where she was May Queen and returned to Lookout Mountain to live and teach at Girls Preparatory School.

She married William Winkler Voigt and had children Walter Read (Permelia) Voigt and Fifi Voigt (Bo) Johnson. In 1972, Hilda married Edward Young Chapin III. Her stepchildren are Edward Young Chapin IV (deceased), Garnet Carter (Nina)Chapin, William Henry (Joan) Chapin, Mary Chapin (Ken) Young, and James Inman (Erin) Chapin.

Mr. and Mrs. Chapin divided their time between Lookout Mountain and Vero Beach, Fla. Mrs. Chapin was active in the Garden Club of America in Tennessee and in Florida. She attended the Church of the Good Shepherd where she served on the altar guild, flower guild and in the bookstore. She was also an active member of her church in Vero Beach, St. Mark's Anglican.

Mrs. Chapin was the consummate hostess, loving entertaining and cooking. She and Mr. Chapin travelled the world and enjoyed a full and active 43 years together. They were members of Lookout Mountain Golf Club, Lookout Mountain Fairyland Club, the Honors Golf Club, and Johns' Island Club of Vero Beach.

In addition to her children and stepchildren, Mrs. Chapin is survived by 16 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews who gave her great joy during her lifetime.

A very special thanks goes out to her companions, Dee Duke and Josh Foster, and to the caring professionals and her friends from Silverleaf Homecare.

Services were conducted on Saturday.

Arrangements were by Covenant Funeral & Crematory, Crox family owned and operated.
