Covenant Volleyball Earns Two Wins Friday

DANVILLE, Va. -- The Covenant volleyball team opened up a USA South quad-match on Friday in Danville, Va., with a 3-0 (25-15, 25-21, 25-20) victory over host Averett. Covenant then cruised past Ferrum in three sets by scores of 25-15, 25-19, 25-13.

With the wins, Covenant extends its win streak to six as they move to 15-6 overall on the year and 5-1 in the USA South.

In the first match, Chelsea VanDyk had 12 kills, with a hitting percentage of .571, to go with two service aces and two digs to lead the Lady Scots.
Ginny Moore produced a double-double with 10 kills and 12 digs. Schuyler Moore and Stephanie Kirkpatrick had 15 and 14 assists, respectively, while Moore had a team-high 17 digs.

As a team, Covenant had a hitting percentage of .221 with 42 kills. It is the fourth time in the last five matches that Covenant has had a hitting percentage of better than .220.

In the first set, Covenant broke a 3-3 tie on a VanDyk service ace and the Lady Scots would never trail again. Schuyler Moore and Cora Schroeder had consecutive kills to end the set giving the Lady Scots a 1-0 match lead.

Covenant tallied 17 kills in the second set and pulled away midway through the set to gain a 2-0 match lead. The Lady Scots went on a 7-1 scoring run, capped by back-to-back kills from VanDyk, to break an 8-8 tie and go ahead 15-9. After Averett cut the Covenant lead to 24-21, Ginny Moore ended the set with a kill. The Lady Scots then led for the entirety of the third set as they took the sweep.

Averett (11-9, 6-2 USA South) got 10 kills from freshman Hannah Shields, while Nicole Barringer had 24 assists and 13 digs.

Covenant easily dispatched Ferrum in the second match of the day. The Lady Scots had 44 kills and a hitting percentage of .280. Again it was VanDyk who led the way as she recorded nine kills with just two errors to go along with two solo blocks. Schuyler Moore had a season-high 31 assists along with seven kills.

Ginny Moore led the Lady Scots with 12 digs while also adding six kills.

Covenant collected 18 kills in the opening set and jumped out to a 10-5 lead before stretching that to a 20-10 advantage after a VanDyk kill. Ferrum cut the lead to 21-15, but the Lady Scots responded by scoring the final four points, which included a pair of kills from Ginny Moore.

In the second set, Covenant held a slim 18-15 lead before pulling away with a 7-4 scoring run. Maddie Wieskamp and VanDyk had consecutive kills to end the frame and put Covenant ahead 2-0 in the match. The Lady Scots got out to a huge 14-3 lead in the third set as they cruised to their second sweep of the day.

Jordan Joyce and Ebony Crawford each led Ferrum (3-14, 2-8 USA South) with four kills, while Emily Danner had 18 assists.

Covenant returns to play on Tuesday, Oct. 7 at Agnes Scott for a non-conference matchup. Match time is set for 7 p.m. in Decatur, Ga.
