Lee Falls 3-0 At Shorter

In what always proves to be a difficult place to play the Lee volleyball team fell on the road at Shorter University, 3-0 in a Gulf South Conference contest on Friday evening.

The Lady Flames were hoping to make it four wins in row after winning three-straight conference matches over Mississippi College, West Alabama and West Georgia. With the loss Lee drops to 10-17 overall and 7-10 in conference play.

Shorter (19-3, 16-1) maintains their hold on first place in conference play with the win.West Florida files in at second (12-3) with Valdosta State next at 12-4 as the GSC concludes regular season play next weekend.

The Lady Hawks cruised to a 25-17 opening set victory over the Lady Flames.
Set two was far more competitive as Lee held set point at 24-23 but failed to put the home team away with Shorter rallying to win 28-26. The two clubs bounced back in forth in the final set before the Lady Hawks pulled away with for 25-21 victory to complete the sweep.

Lauren Williams led the balanced Lee offensive attack with eight kills. The senior made an impact defensively as well with four blocks. She leads the team in both categories (224 kills, 64 blocks). Catherine Conley and Latrice Johnson added seven kills apiece. Johnson tallied a match-high 18 digs.

Haley Foote pitched in 16 assists while Sadie Johnson registered 15 assists. Stephanie Hernandez aided the defensive effort with 15 digs.

Erica Baker paced the Shorter offense with 12 slams. Elizabeth Dowd and Anna Graham each had eight kills. Dena Pierce set things up with 21 assists.

The Lady Flames will have a few days off before closing the 2014 campaign with three home matches next week. Lee opens up with Alabama-Huntsville on Tuesday at 7 p.m. before the annual Volley for a Cure match on Friday night against Christian Brothers University. The season ends with a Saturday night (Nov. 8) contest with Union University.
