UTC Women's Tennis Team Earns ITA Academic Award

  • Friday, July 11, 2014

For the fourth year in a row, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women’s tennis team earned the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Team Academic Award.  This is also the eighth time since 2000 the Mocs have been honored by the ITA for their work in the classroom.

The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or above.

All eligible student-athletes whose names appear on the NCAA eligibility form and have competed in one or more varsity matches must average into the GPA for the current academic year (including fall 2013 and spring 2014).

"I am proud of our team for displaying excellence on the tennis court and in the classroom,” stated head coach Jeff Clark.  “Our student-athletes strive to represent the University and the city of Chattanooga with distinction."

In addition to the team award, four individuals earned ITA Scholar-Athlete honors, including senior Alexa Flynn, juniors Kaylene Chadwell and Claire Mulyadi and sophomore Alison Storie

In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must meet the following criteria:
1.) be a varsity letter winner,
2.) have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and
3.) have been enrolled at their present school for at least 2 semesters (including freshman through senior year).

The Mocs return eight of nine letter winners from last year’s team that went 18-5 and finished third in the Southern Conference at 7-2.  It was the second year in a row with 18 wins for UTC and its best showing in the SoCon race since 2002.  UTC finished the year ranked No. 9 in the final ITA Ohio Valley Region poll.
