Jane Southwell Martin, 91, of Chattanooga died on Monday, March 23, 2015.

She was born on Sept. 18, 1923, in New York City, NY to the late Harry J. and Florence Greene Southwell.  She married John Martin, Jr. and moved to Chattanooga in 1946 where they raised their nine children. Jane felt that she and her husband were so blessed that she wanted to give back to her church and her community. She worked diligently for several voluntary causes including Ladies of Charity, The Ave Maria Circle, Meals on Wheels, Chattanooga Area Food Bank and Catholic Charities. Jane was always an avid reader and conducted voluntary study groups with OLPH students in the Great Books Program teaching the classics.  She also volunteered her time with the OLPH Kindergarten students.

Her last eight years were spent at Morning Pointe/the Lantern of Chattanooga where she became very special in the hearts of the caregivers, residents and their family members.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Martin, Jr. and her son, Richard Southwell Martin.

She is survived by her eight children, Lynn (Bobby) Crantford, Jack (Susie) Martin, Pat Lawhorn, Joanne (Bill Toop) Martin, Bob Martin, Nancy (Pat) Neuhoff, Susan (Robert) Blasius and Pam (Joe) Franklin; 13 grandchildren, Shelaine Morrison, John and Chris Crantford, Frank Martin, Julie Ash, Matt Martin, Megan and Daniel Neuhoff, Taylor Vaughn, Chase Blasius, Amy Smith, Emily Farnsley and Joseph Franklin; and 11 great-grandchildren.

A special heartfelt love goes to Jane’s “seventh daughter” and sister to all of us, Kay Hines Tatum. We Love you dearly, Kay.

A special loving thanks also to all her caregivers at the Lantern. You know who you are. You are the best.

A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 27, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church with Father Jim Vick, Father Joe McMahon and Father Mike Creson officiating.

Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday, March 26, at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, 404 South Moore Road.
