Covenant Drops Pair To No. 9 Emory

  • Tuesday, March 31, 2015
Playing against one of the top Division III teams in the country, the Covenant softball team was unable to get anything going against two top pitchers and succumbed to No. 9 Emory 14-0 and 9-1 in a doubleheader Tuesday.

The games drop Covenant to 9-13 on the year and continues a losing streak that now stands at six games in a row. Emory is now 24-2 for the season and have won 13 straight.

Game 1: Emory 14, Covenant 0 (5 innings)

In game one, the Lady Scots faced pitcher Sydney Carpenter, who started the day 13-0 with a 1.89 ERA on the season.
Carpenter allowed just two hits in three innings of work as Emory jumped out to a 7-0 lead after two innings.

Hannah Sendel hit a three-run home run in the second for the game's big blow and the Eagles had six extra-base knocks of their 19 total hits.

Carpenter struck out three batters and won her 21st straight decision. The junior has not lost in her college career.

Hannah Rogers (1-1) gets the loss in her first start of the season. Cori Hilt's double in the second and Morgan Lane's single in the third were the only hits for Covenant.

Game 2: Emory 9, Covenant 1 (6 innings)

After facing Emory's top pitcher in game one, the Lady Scots ran into Brittany File. File shut down the Lady Scots offense as Emory cruised to a 9-1 victory to claim the sweep.

After two scoreless innings from Covenant starter Cris Gant, Emory broke out with five runs in the third inning to take the lead. A two-run double by Tara Fallahee and a three-run home run by Amy Wray provided the offense in the inning.

Covenant got on the board in the sixth. Kasey Hart's sacrifice bunt was mishandled by the Emory defense and allowed Kaitlyn Sirmons, who had walked to lead off the inning, to score. Jordan Brett and Joni Johnson each had a hit for Covenant, while Lane reached base twice with two walks.

Covenant was able to muster just two hits off File and reliever Jacky Farrow. File (9-2) gets the win after pitching five innings of one-hit ball with two walks and nine strikeouts.

Gant (3-4) pitched two innings, giving up five runs, in the loss. Johnson (three innings) and Tyler Epes (one inning) finished off the game for the Lady Scots.

Covenant will be back in USA South action on Friday at Hutingdon in Montgomery, Ala. First pitch of game one is set for 2 p.m. EDT.
