The Adult Education Program at Georgia Northwestern Technical College (GNTC) is offering a new Saturday cohort program in Chattooga, Murray, Polk, and Whitfield counties as part of the Literacy to Workforce Initiative (LWI).
Classes will meet on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and participants have the opportunity to earn their GED diploma in four months. Students also may earn their GeogiaBEST certificate as part of the program.
To be eligible for the program, students must be 16 years old or over and have a score of 6.9 or above on the Tests of Adult Basic Education (TABE). Adults over the age of eighteen who meet Workforce Investment Act (WIA) eligibility may be able to receive financial support.
A collaboration between the Technical College System of Georgia, the Office of Adult Education, and the Georgia Office of Workforce Development; the Literacy to Workforce Initiative focuses on 10 counties in Georgia where 28% or more of the adult population does not have a high school or GED diploma.
GNTC serves four of the counties identified in the 10 county area: Chattooga, Murray, Polk and Whitfield. The initiative fosters a partnership between GNTC’s Adult Education Program and the Northwest Georgia Regional Commission Workforce Development Board to provide key services to students who are seeking a GED diploma and employment.

The Adult Education program at Georgia Northwestern Technical College served 3,245 students and graduated 699 students with a GED diploma in Fiscal Year 2014. The Adult Education program at GNTC serves students in nine counties with campuses located in Floyd, Gordon, Polk, Walker, and Whitfield counties and off-campus learning centers in Catoosa, Chattooga, Dade, Floyd, Gordon, Murray, Polk, and Walker counties. Classes are also held in five different Correctional facilities. GED Testing Centers are located on campus in Floyd, Gordon, Walker, and Whitfield counties.
GNTC is an official General Educational Development® Testing Center and a site for computer-based GED Testing in partnership with Pearson Vue, GED Testing Service®, and the Technical College System of Georgia. The mission of GNTC’s Adult Education program is to enable every adult learner in the service delivery area to acquire the necessary basic skills to be able to compete successfully in today’s workplace, strengthen family foundations, and exercise full citizenship.
