World War II Veteran Was An Electrician For 60 Years

Samuel Stuart Starnes, 87, of Sale Creek, died on Sunday, June 14, 2015.

He was a United States Army veteran. He entered the service at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina and became a member of the Company F 511th Parachute Infantry Regiment. Sam was stationed at Hachinohe, Japan during World War II. He received the Army of Occupation Medal Japan and the World War II Victory Medal. After his service, he became an electrician and a member of the IBEW where he just received his sixty-year member pin. Sam was also a member of the Sale Creek Masonic Lodge 280 F&AM, a member of the Alhambra Shrine and a member of the Sale Creek Independent Presbyterian Church. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jerimah “Jerry” F. Starnes and Pearl Newton Penland; wife, Frances Hazel Starnes; wife, Geraldine Hoffman Starnes; son, Samuel Lewis Starnes; brothers, Erwin S. Starnes, Alfred L. Starnes and sisters, Nellie S. Walker, Matilda S. Law and Alice S. Weeks. 

Sam is survived by his granddaughter, Carmen Orr; step-sons, Van and Randy Martin and several grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. 

The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. on Tuesday at Williamson & Sons Funeral Home with Pastor Phil Evaul officiating.

Visitation is from 12-2 p.m. on Tuesday. A private burial will be Wednesday in Candler, N.C.
