Dr. Mary Elizabeth “Betty” Stroud, 87, passed away on June 26, 2015 at Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga.

She will be deeply missed by her family and friends.

Betty was born in Batesville, Ar. to parents, Lucille and Curtis Thompson. She graduated from Arkansas College and in 1952 became one of the first women to receive a medical degree from the University ofArkansas. Betty and her family moved to Chattanooga in 1962, and she was a practicing psychiatrist in the area for more than 40 years. During part of this time, she ran a private practice from an office at Memorial Hospital.

Betty loved to visit new places, and during the years she and her family traveled extensively across the country, often camping and canoeing. She was deeply attached to her pets, beginning with four beautiful German Shepherd dogs and a somewhat chubby beagle, followed by a number of spoiled-and-contented cats in her later years.

Betty also cherished living on scenic Missionary Ridge with its heritage and stunning view of the city. She took great joy in the arts, sometimes simply listening to jazz greats such as Art Tatum on NPR or perhaps attending a local classical concert or dance recital.

Betty treasured the company of her many friends and happily traveled with them to museum exhibitions throughout the Southeast. Always fond of gardening, she particularly enjoyed attending the annual flower shows in Atlanta and Philadelphia.

Betty is survived by her husband of 57 years, Robert Stroud, Sr., her son, Robert Stroud, Jr., and her daughter, Judy Stroud.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, June 30, from 5–7 p.m. at the East Chapel of the Chattanooga Funeral Home, 404 South Moore Road, East Ridge.

A private memorial service will be held graveside on Wednesday, July 1.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or the charity of your choice.
