Police Say Validated Gang Member Almost Ran Over Members Of The Street Crimes Unit

Police said a validated member of the Athens Park Bloods almost ran over several members of the Street Crimes Unit in an incident on Saturday.

James Edward Shepheard, 27, of 1514 E. 12th St., is facing a host of charges.

Police said they were notified that a party was being held at 909 Crutchfield St. with gang members from rival groups present and a "high probability of violence."

Officers said they spotted a black male sitting in a white sedan with Virginia tags smoking in a parking lot.

Police, who noticed a strong smell of marijuana, were questioning the lone occupant of the vehicle when he suddenly lurched the car forward. Two members of the Street Crimes Unit had to dive out of the way and two others were nearby.

As police gave chase, the car dangerously turned left onto crowded Amnicola Highway, it was stated. The car continued at a very high rate of speed until it was finally stopped on Holtzclaw Avenue.

Officers said the driver, identified as Shepheard, had a large amount of money in his pocket. The $1,073 was confiscated as drug money.

Found in the vehicle were drugs, liquor and a handgun.

Police said Shepheard did not have a valid driver's license or insurance.

Erika Hudson called to say that Shepheard had taken the vehicle without her permission.

Shepheard was charged with four counts of aggravated assault on police, evading arrest, possession of a firearm while in the commission of a drug crime, reckless endangerment, driving on a suspended license, possession of drugs, disorderly conduct, not having insurance and leaving the scene of an accident.
