270 Acres Of Woodland Burning At Flipper Bend, Mowbray; Heavy Smoke Causing Air Quality Problems

  • Tuesday, November 8, 2016

Authorities said over 230 acres continue to burn at Flipper Bend at North Chickamauga Creek and another 35-40 acres are still burning at Mowbray Mountain off Hot Water Road.

Also, fires were burning next to I-75 southbound lanes between Cleveland and Ooltewah on Tuesday morning, causing lanes to temporarily be closed.

The fires, along with blazes in Marion County and Sequatchie County, are sending plumes of smoke into the area that have caused an Air Quality Alert to be issued for the Chattanooga area.

Officials said the top and bottom areas of Flipper Bend continue to contain the fire within the fire breaks.

Wild land fire personnel continue to work on the "flank" to connect the fire breaks with the top and the bottom. However, this area of fire was not contained by 4:30 p.m.

There were several drops of water and fire retardant on Tuesday afternoon.

Also, three bulldozers continued to create fire breaks.

There were 30 wild land firefighters on the scene at Flipper Bend on Tuesday.

Officials said there was no structural endangerment.

At Mowbray Mountain, there were two private forestry companies - Walden's Ridge LLC and American Forest Management Company - fighting the fire.

It was not contained to the fire breaks as of Tuesday afternoon.

Bulldozers were on the scene creating fire breaks.

This fire also had no structural endangerment.
