The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program, the United States' largest youth recognition program based exclusively on volunteer community service, has named Baylor senior Joe Julian a distinguished finalist in Tennessee. The program named two honorees in the state and named Julian as one of six more distinguished finalists.

In addition to the Prudential award, Julian has qualified for the President's Volunteer Service Award, which recognizes Americans of all ages who have volunteered significant amounts of time to serve their community and country.

The awards come to Julian for his work in renovating the library at the Carver Youth and Family Development Center. Baylor students involved in the school's community service program, like Julian, tutor and serve children at Carver every afternoon. Julian led the effort by applying for and receiving grants and donations, collecting over 700 new books while salvaging older ones, applying fresh paint, and providing new lighting and furnishings for the new library.
