Sweetens Cove Golf Club Named #1 Course In Tennessee By Golfweek Magazine

  • Friday, April 15, 2016

Sweetens Cove Golf Club has been hailed by architecture critics as being one of the finest courses of its kind anywhere in the world. Its unique playing strategies and artistically constructed features led Adam Lawrence, Editor of Golf Course Architecture, to rave, “[Sweetens Cove] is a truly outstanding piece of golf design & construction.”

Along with securing the highest rating in Tennessee on the 2016 Golfweek “Best Courses You Can Play” list, Sweetens Cove was recognized with the highest average rating of ALL golf courses in Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana in the recently released Confidential Guide to Golf Courses, v. 2

To maximize the opportunity for area golfers, Club ownership is offering the most unique and exciting membership package in golf, The Sweetens Cove Tour. For a fraction of the price of area private clubs and as low as $100/month, players can have unlimited access to the course while competing in a year long, Fed Ex Cup style competition as an individual or with a group of friends on a team for a chance to win two (2) years of free golf. This year-long competition format will perfectly complement the architecture of the course, notes course Architect and Club Co-Founder, Rob Collins. “We felt like it was very important for us to find a way to promote competition that could bring out the architectural subtleties of the layout, and we believe the Sweetens Cove Tour will do exactly that. Players will be able to compete against their friends throughout the year with a chance to win some truly incredible prizes. There simply isn’t another membership like it anywhere.”

“Chattanooga and its surroundings areas are a great location for golf, with venues of the quality of The Honors Course, Lookout Mountain and Black Creek within a short drive,” said Mr. Collins. “But we think that, even among such great courses, Sweetens Cove will be something completely different for local and visiting golfers. While it has its own unique flavor, it shares qualities and characteristics with some of the best golf courses in the British Isles, in addition to drawing inspiration from American classics like Pinehurst #2, Pine Valley, and the iconoclastic Tobacco Road in Sanford, NC.

Mr. Collins highlights the par three fourth hole. With a huge 20,000 sq. ft. green, divided into several compartments, the hole can play anything between 95-210 yards, and, depending on the location of tee box and flagstick can be entirely blind, partly blind or totally visible. But virtually every part of the massive green is accessible with a putter from every other part. “It’s a hole where it is genuinely true to say that you’ll never play it the same way twice,” said Mr. Collins.

Course superintendent, Brent Roberson heads the maintenance team at Sweetens Cove fresh from managing operations at the high end, well-known facilities at Bear Lakes Country Club and The Bears Club. He said, “Sweetens Cove is a true links set in the foothills of the Cumberland Plateau. To me, the bunkering, scenery, and playing strategies make the course.”

Sweetens Cove General Manager, Patrick Boyd, remarked, “The golf course is the most perfect alchemy of template strategies paired with bold, dramatic features anywhere.”
