Dalton Police Warn Public Of Telephone Scam

  • Friday, April 22, 2016

The Dalton Police Department has heard reports of a scammer calling residents in the area claiming to be from the Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office stating that the resident has missed jury duty and must pay money to avoid going to jail.

Officials said, "This is a scam. While it’s possible for a warrant to be issued if a citizen fails to answer a jury summons, the court would first seek to resolve the matter in a different way. That communication would also not take place over the phone. And finally, representatives from law enforcement do not demand money over the phone. If someone calls you claiming to be a law enforcement officer demanding money, please hang up and contact police."

The non-emergency number for the 911 dispatch center is 706 370-4900.
