Franklin, Selmon Ted, Jr.

Longtime Architect In Chattanooga

  • Tuesday, May 24, 2016
Selmon Ted Franklin, Jr., 86, died on May 21, 2016, at Alexian Health Care.

He was born in Chattanooga in 1929, and lived there all his life except for his college and army years. He graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology after which he served in the U.S. Army for two years. He returned to Chattanooga as partner in the architectural firm Selmon T. Franklin, Associates.

As a follower of Jesus Christ, he was a life-long member of the First Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder and trustee. For many years he worked with Callie Sue Chapman at Inner City Ministries and also served as Scout Master for several inner city Boy Scout Troops.

He was a strong leader of his family and provided many cherished memories for them. These include hiking and camping trips, church family camps, family reunions at Stubb’s Island in Mississippi, and Sunday after-church lunches.

Ted was a planter of trees and a model of hard work and perseverance. His children and grandchildren remember working with him on Saturdays and even holidays.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Marjorie Major Franklin, and four children: Marjorie Cooper; Dr. Ted Franklin, III, and his wife, Ellen Marsh Franklin; Bob Franklin and his wife, Lisa Schumpert Franklin; and Hannah Franklin. “Papa” is also survived by nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services will be held on Friday, May 27, at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church. Visitation will be at 10 a.m. at the church. He will be interred at Forest Hills Cemetery immediately following the service.

Memorial contributions can be made to Camp Vesper Point or the Cherokee Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America.

Arrangements are by Heritage Funeral Home, 7454 East Brainerd Road.
