  • Saturday, June 11, 2016
Five people were arrested Saturday night after police said they took part in a carjacking on Central Avenue, then wrecked by Walgreens in North Chattanooga.

Police later said they were all juveniles.

One was charged with;aggravated robbery and evading arrest. The other four were charged with evading arrest and criminal conspiracy.

The Chattanooga Police Department was notified at 7:36 p.m. of a carjacking at the 5300 block of Central Avenue.

Multiple suspects reportedly carjacked a victim at gunpoint and fled from the scene in the victim's vehicle - a gold Chevrolet Malibu. At least one of the carjackers had a gun.

Officers citywide were notified of the incident and the vehicle's description.

A Chattanooga Police Department Motor Patrol Officer, Investigator David Cowan, observed a gold Chevrolet Malibu travelling north on Market Street near the 4th Street intersection, the same vehicle description from the carjacking.

Upon stopping at the traffic signal on Market Street at Aquarium Way behind the suspect vehicle, Investigator Cowan activated his emergency lights on his police motorcycle to attempt a traffic stop.

The suspects fled north on Market Street without regard to police.

Then the suspects attempted a right turn from Market Street onto Frazier Avenue but were travelling too fast to negotiate the turn.

The driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a tree on the westbound sidewalk, and then five suspects fled on foot behind the Walgreens.

Investigator Cowan continued north on Market Street and entered the rear entrance to Walgreens where the suspects fled.

He, along with several other officers' assistance, was able to get all five suspects in custody without further incident at 7:45 p.m.

No injuries were reported as a result of the incident

The Chattanooga Police Department Violent Crimes Bureau is continuing to investigate this case and charges are currently pending at this time.
