City Of Chattanooga Declares June 14 "Blood Assurance Day"

  • Wednesday, June 8, 2016

The city of Chattanooga has declared Tuesday, June 14 “Blood Assurance Day” which coincides with World Blood Donor Day, a globally recognized day to encourage blood donations and raise awareness for the constant need for blood donors. The organization is asking 600 community members to make a blood donation on Blood Assurance Day to help replenish the blood supply used by local hospitals so far this summer.

As a thank you for donating on Blood Assurance Day, all donors will receive complimentary cake and refreshments from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. while supplies last. In addition, if the organization receives 600 blood donations, it will draw one lucky winner to receive two tickets to the inaugural Battle at Bristol, a college football battle between the Virginia Tech Hokies and the Tennessee Volunteers at the Bristol Motor Speedway.

“Blood Assurance is grateful to the city of Chattanooga for recognizing not only our organization, but those in the community who selflessly donate blood and help save the lives of many across the region,” said Mindy Quinn, marketing manager for Blood Assurance. “In celebration of Blood Assurance Day, we hope that everyone in the community will take just 30 minutes out of their day to make a lasting impact on someone’s life.”

According to America’s Blood Centers, every two seconds someone in the United States needs blood. Over 540 volunteer Blood Assurance donors are needed every day in order to adequately supply the demand of the more than 75 health care facilities serviced by the organization.

To be eligible to donate blood, you must be at least 17 years old (16 years old with parental consent), weigh 110 pounds or more and be in good health. Donors are asked to drink plenty of fluids - avoiding caffeine - and eat a meal that is rich in iron prior to donating.
