The Sherrif's Office said Friday that a preliminary autopsy of the woman who died at the workhouse shows it to be a medical condition, not physical trauma. The final autopsy report is pending micro biology and toxicology reports.

The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office earlier said it had been requested by the Hamilton County District Attorney’s Office to investigate an “in custody” death of an inmate at the CCA facility.

Officials said, "Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office investigators are currently in the preliminary stages of the investigation and in accordance with our procedure regarding on-going investigations, no information is available to be released from the HSCO at this time."

There was no information given on when the death occurred, but a friend of the family of 26-year-old Madison Bailee Deal said she was stomped by a group of female inmates at the Silverdale facility.

He said both her cranium and her esophagus were crushed in the attack last Saturday and that she had been in a coma in the Intensive Care Unit since the incident.

She died at 5 a.m. today, it was stated.

"Very early on the family was told that she probably was not going to make it," he said.

The family friend said it was the woman's first day at the workhouse.

He said she was jailed because she shoplifted a $14 T-shirt, then did not show up in court. Ms. Deal was arrested twice on theft charges this year.

He said the family was told that the woman lay for hours before her body was discovered by guards.

The friend said, "It's a horrible, horrible crime and I don't know why nothing has been said about this before."
