Sanders, Doris Elaine

Doris Elaine Cousins Sanders, 89, died peacefully on Saturday, August 20, 2016 in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Doris was born on Aug. 16, 1927, in Tallassee, Al., to Frank and Florence Cousins and lived most of her life in Elmore and Montgomery counties.  She relocated to Chattanooga in 2010 to be near her daughter. 

Doris was predeceased by her parents, two sisters, Ardelle Woods and Arlyne Doggett, and her husband, Roland Sanders.

Doris was proud of her 40+ year career as a nurse and nursing instructor.  Throughout most of her career, she was associated with St. Margaret's Hospital and Greil Memorial Hospital, both in Montgomery.

Doris was a longtime member of the Order of Eastern Star and held dual membership at Elizabeth Armstrong Chapter #10 of Montgomery, Alabama and Sunnyside Chapter #359 of Chattanooga.

Doris is survived by four children and eight step-children, Dwight Benton (Gloria) of Miami, Ok.; Kirk Benton of Hartwell, Ga.; Mical Traynor (Dan) of Chattanooga; Mickey O'Bryan of Gulfport, Ms.; Cindy Schram (Butch), Judy Harris (Kenny), Ramona Ebbinga (Stewart), Rhonda Givens (John), and Steve Sanders (Johnnie), of Wetumpka, Al.; Wanda Kennessey (Randy) of Loganville, Ga.; Camille Dixon (Jay) and Vanessa Sanders of Hoover, Al. Doris is also survived by 28 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Doris will be on Saturday, Aug. 27, at First Presbyterian Church, 100 West Bridge Street, Wetumpka, Al. 36092.  Reverend Jonathan Yarboro will officiate.  Visitation will be at 10 a.m. CDT, with a Celebration of Life service at 11 a.m. CDT. Burial will follow at nearby Pineview Memorial Gardens.

Guests are invited to join the family afterward for a community meal at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to First Presbyterian Church of Wetumpka or the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America (www.ccfa.org).
