Kaepernick Protest Is Way Off Base

  • Wednesday, September 7, 2016

I have great respect for Randy Smith who has given some valuable advice in many of his sports pieces over the years, but he has gotten the one on Colin Kaepernick all wrong.

Yes Colin has the right to express his opinion, yes he has the freedom to "take a knee" instead of standing for the National Anthem to make a statement about some wrong he has suffered. But what he has done is neither of those.

Rather, he has chosen to express a convoluted view of something he perceives as wrong in America by disrespecting his country, his flag, and all of the men and women who serve both in the military and in the blue line. That is not okay.

He has also expressed some remedy that he seeks but doesn't state how it can be achieved to his satisfaction. He basically says that for him to stand would take our country doing better. How will he know when it's better?

His is an ugly, embarrassing protest without a resolvable cause. He is just another "prima donna" athlete who has been coddled and pampered all his life and thus has failed to grow and mature as normal adults do.
