  • Thursday, January 5, 2017

University of Tennessee at Chattanooga's new Defensive Coordinator Brandon Staley has been named the 2016 FootballScoop Division III Coordinator of the Year presented by ProGrass, the online publication announced today.  This award is selected by prior winners.

Staley helped lead John Carroll University to a 12-2 record under new Mocs head coach Tom Arth.  That included an unblemished run to the Ohio Athletic Conference championship.  John Carroll ranked third in Division III in total defense, fourth in scoring defense, sixth in pass efficiency defense and 13th in rushing defense.

The Blue Streaks tied the program record with 12 wins and reached the Division III semifinals, falling to Wisconsin-Oshkosh by a final score of 10-3.

"I am very proud of Brandon and honored to work with him," stated Arth.  "His expertise, hard work and commitment to his players is rare.  This is a very well-deserved recognition."

JCU limited 12 of their 14 opponents to 17 points or fewer (and that 17-point performance, against Wesley College in the second round of the Division III playoffs, came in double overtime. Five of John Carroll's opponents failed to reach 10 points.
