Edwards, Ota Kay "Mamaw" (Ringgold)

  • Friday, December 8, 2017

Ota Kay “Mamaw” Edwards, 89, went home to be with her King on Friday, December 8, 2017. She was met at the gates by her brothers, sisters, her best friend of more than 60 years, George “Papaw” Edwards and her memories.

She is survived in death by her two children George Edwards Jr., and Jane (Vance) Boone, by her grandchildren, and her great grandchildren.

Born in 1928 she arrived just before the beginning of the Great Depression.  She was around before the F.B.I., before the Golden Gate Bridge was complete and even beat NASA to the stage.  She witnessed an America that was attacked at Pearl Harbor, and would later put a man on the moon.

Ota Kay was a strong woman who raised four generations, including her own generation, joining the work force at just 15 years old to help support her family, working many years at Peerless Woolen Mills. She would go on to support her family for the rest of her life, ending her working career as a CNA at Parkside Nursing Home. Nothing came before family in the eyes of Ota Kay. She was a hardworking woman who never ceased to put others before herself. She lived an amazing life with her husband, George, raising their children, and then helping to raise grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She didn’t let her weakness show, a superhero among mortals. Alzheimer’s was the final battle this strong woman would face, and though it took a number of her memories, it never took her strength, love or character.

She left this life surrounded by the love she herself had planted and grown, patched and sewed, and entered an eternal life with all of her memories. We love you Mamaw.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Vince Dean. Interment will follow in Anderson Memorial Gardens, Ringgold.
