Lee Men, Women Fall 1-0 At Christian Brothers

  • Saturday, September 23, 2017

Thanks to a goal just two minutes into the second half the Christian Brothers Bucs knocked off the Lee men's soccer team, 1-0 on Friday night on a muggy night in West Tennessee.

The Buc's Bernado Ferreira set up Brendan Bennett who struck for the game winner at the 46:53 mark.

Lee had opportunities to score throughout the match as it generated 11 shots and eight corner kicks. CBU had 10 shots and settled for just one corner. Both clubs placed two shots on goal.

Tristen Putnam took the loss in goal for the Flames as he allowed one goal and recorded one save. The senior has allowed one goal or kept a clean sheet in five of the seven matches this season.

Viktor Hoestbo registered a shutout and was credited with two saves for the Memphis club.

Junior forward Drew Jackson and freshman midfielder Jared McWhorter led the Flames with three shots each. Junior Jose Orellana took a pair of shots while sophomore Alfie Coldron came off the bench and attempted two shots of his own.

"I thought we competed well tonight and I'm proud of our team for that and the effort they showed," said head coach Derek Potteiger. "I really felt like we were the better team but sometimes that's not how the game goes. That's the second straight game we've made a foolish mistake by our own goal and that was the difference in the match."

Seven yellow cards were shown and 28 fouls called in what always seems to be a physical battle between the two conference foes.

The Flames fall to 2-3-2 on the season and are 1-2 in the GSC. The Bucs improve to an even 3-3 on the year and are off to a 2-0 start in the conference.

Lee will wrap up the weekend road trip with a visit to rival Union University on Sunday evening at 5:15 p.m.

For the first time this season, the Lee University women's soccer team tasted defeat in a Gulf South Conference matchup with a 1-0 setback at Christian Brothers University. The Lady Flames dropped to 4-3 overall and 3-1 in the GSC, while CBU improved to 6-2 (3-1 GSC).

After a scoreless first half, the hosts scored the lone goal of the match just over seven minutes into the second period when Lauren Magdefrau delivered the eventual game-winner off an assist by Anna Della Rosa.

“I think we’re creating really good opportunities, now we just have to find the goal,” said Lee head coach Chris Hennessey. “Unfortunately, the other teams seem to find one-half chance and put it away.”

Lee fired off 17 shots, but placed just five on goal. The Lady Bucs put four of their seven shots on frame. CBU also took five corner kicks to Lee's one.

Haley Gribler tallied three saves in the loss. Autumn Woods secured the clean sheet with five saves.

“We have some things we need to sort out and hopefully we can get a good result against Union on Sunday and just keep moving forward,” added Hennessey.

The Lady Flames will look to get back on the winning track on Sunday against Union in Jackson, Tenn. The GSC match is scheduled for a 3 p.m. EDT start.
