House Speaker Beth Harwell is asking a state legislator to resign his seat over allegations of sexual misconduct over three decades ago.

Rep. Harwell, who is also running for governor, said Rep. David Byrd, R-Waynesboro, should step down.

Rep. Byrd was a former high school basketball coach. Three of his former players have come forward saying he had sexual contact with them that has scarred them.

One of the women recently called Rep. Byrd and recorded the conversation.

The district attorney in the section that includes Wayne County said he had not received any complaints about Rep. Byrd, who is sponsoring an Arming Teachers bill.

The retired principal, teacher and coach is married with two children, a grandchild and a great-grandchild.
