Professional Development Luncheon Featuring Discovery, Inc.’s SVP Alaka Williams Set For Sept. 5

Alaka Williams, senior vice president U.S. Networks-Human Resources for Discovery, Inc., is the guest speaker for the Public Relations Society of America Lookout Chapter’s professional development luncheon on Sept. 5, at 11:30 a.m. at the Mountain City Club. Discovery, Inc. is a mass media conglomerate known for owning and running the award-winning Discovery Channel, Animal Planet, HGTV, Food Network, Science Channel and TLC, among others.
 
Titled “Diversity: Not Just a Buzzword, But a Catalyst for Change,” Ms.
Williams’ presentation will discuss the whys and hows of incorporating diversity into the lifeblood of your business and its communications. Ms. Williams will also address the challenges of localizing diversity, outline how diversity is a growing business driver and share best practices in communicating with diverse audiences.
 
At Discovery, Inc., Ms. Williams is responsible for providing organizational, leadership and individual performance counsel to various business units. In addition to her professional work, she’s also a board member for Girl Talk, Women in Cable Telecommunications and Big Brothers Big Sisters of East TN.  Additionally, Ms. Williams is involved in the Emma Bowen Foundation’s Youth and Young Professionals program and the Year Up program in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.
 
PRSA is the trade association for public relations professionals. The Lookout Chapter presents a luncheon once a month, where members and non-members can network and learn from guest speakers. "The meetings are valuable not only to public relations specialists but also to all communication, advertising, marketing, media and business professionals interested in learning how to maintain their brand in the evolving marketing and communications landscape," officials said.
