Raymond Dionte Hunter
A man who robbed a couple at gunpoint outside Five Guys at Fourth and Broad streets has been sentenced to serve 78 months in federal prison.
Raymond Dionte Hunter, 31, appeared before Judge Travis McDonough.
Hunter earlier pleaded guilty to being a felon in possession of a gun.
During the sentencing hearing Hunter struggled with U.S. marshals in the courtroom several times.
Jackson Whetsel, of the Federal Defender Service, said Hunter was initially ruled incompetent to stand trial. He was later found to be competent.
Attorney Whetsel said Hunter performs well if he stays on his meds, but he said it is difficult to get him to keep taking them.
On Nov. 26, 2017, Hunter pointed a handgun at the couple and took their cell phones since they did not have any money. One of the victims then chased the defendant down and got the cellphones back from him.
The Chattanooga Police Department caught Hunter approximately five minutes later and held him at gunpoint. The defendant threw his gun down to a lower level of a parking garage when CPD caught him. CPD recovered the firearm, which matched the description of the gun the defendant used in the robbery. Both victims identified the defendant as the robber.
