Lee Softball Splits With Bellarmine University

  • Tuesday, March 5, 2019
The Lee softball team split a doubleheader with visiting Bellarmine University on a blistering cold Wednesday afternoon at Butler Field.

The Lady Flames took game one 10-5 but fell in the nightcap to the Knights (9-8), 4-3.

Lee (10-11) will get back into Gulf South Conference play this weekend as it travels to Alabama Huntsville for a three-game series beginning Friday at 4 p.m.

"We weren't prepared for two today and it showed. We missed an opportunity for a home sweep.
We need to grow in mental toughness and grit," said head coach Emily Russell.

GAME 1 – LEE 10 BU 5
After falling behind 4-0 early the Lady Flames settled in and scored six runs in second frame en route to a 10-5 victory over the Knights in game one.

Abby McKinney drove in two runs on a single in the fourth inning to tie the game at 4-4 and helped extend the Lee advantage in the fourth inning as she launched her third home run of the season right field to make it 7-5.

Shonna Penney started but lasted just 1.2 innings giving up four runs, two earned on four hits. She walked three and struck out three.

Steve Baird (3-1) came on in relief and worked the remaining 5.1 innings for the victory. She allowed just one run on three hits.

Olivia Knies (3-2) was chased after failing to get an out in the second inning for Bellarmine. She was tagged with five runs on three hits and two walks. Madeline Kurts tossed three relief innings and surrendered six hits and five runs but only two were earned. Natalie Magnus cleaned things up with two scoreless innings in the circle.

Leadoff hitter Kayla Louie set the table for the Lady Flame offense with three hits and two runs scored. Lily Hatcher, Taylor De Adder and Kiley Longmire also added one-base knocks while Church and Miller scored twice.

GAME 2 – LEE 3 BU 4

The Lady Flames took a three-run lead on Zoe Miller's first career home run as she blasted a shot to right center in the third inning.

Bellarmine responded right back however and put up four runs in the fourth inning and made the lead stick to salvage a split in game two.

De Adder (4-4) went the distance in the circle for the Lady Flames. She punched out nine but was hurt by six walks. The freshman allowed four runs, three earned on five hits.

Magnus started for Bellarmine and worked out around four hits and two walks to keep Lee off the scoreboard thru the first two innings.

Sabrina Fussenegger (3-4) earned the victory as she settled down after giving up the home run to Miller by throwing up four scoreless innings.

The Lady Flames had nine hits and drew five walks but could not find the big hit leaving 12 runners on base.

Hannah Webb had three hits for the Knights, including the go-ahead RBI single in the fourth inning to cap off the rally. Sydney Oskin started the scoring in the fourth with a two-run bloop single to left.
