Tyler Howell, a resident of Red Bank and the current WWTA representative for the city, on Tuesday night was nominated and approved unanimously, to fill a vacant position on the Red Bank Commission. It is a replacement for Vice Mayor Terry Pope, who died recently.

The commissioners in Red Bank are participating in activities that benefit those in need.

The Red Bank Community Food Pantry is a non-profit ministry set up by multiple churches, civic organizations and the city of Red Bank. It will open its doors to the public beginning Thursday, Oct. 17, from 5-7:30 p.m. when there will be a community-wide “stock-the-shelves/grand opening BBQ.” Entertainment at this fundraiser will be the Barefoot Nelly Band. Price for the meal and concert will be a canned good and/or a financial donation.

Commissioner Ruth Jeno told the commissioners that $7,000 in donations to the food pantry have been made in honor of Vice Mayor Pope. She also said that the organization is in need of volunteers to pack food.

Another fundraiser takes place on the first Tuesday of each month at the White Oak Methodist Church, which is a gospel singing and dinner. Donations are accepted.

A blanket-making-party is held on Thursdays from 4-8 p.m. led by Commissioner Jeno at the Red Bank Community Center to benefit two organizations - Lana’s Love, helping children who have cancer and Stacy’s Scoliosis Society. The blankets will be given to children who have surgery for either of these illnesses. Commissioner Jeno said anyone who is interested would be welcome to come.

Commissioner Carol Rose said that after a football player reunion at Red Bank High School last year, people were asked to find and bring old game film so it could be digitized. Now those films from 1969 to 2016 are ready and online. Look at them for fun, said Commissioner Rose. On Sept. 6, she said there will be a tailgate party before the Red Bank/Signal Mountain High School football game. Anyone can come starting at 6 and can then leave to watch the game.

A new business is in town, Pie r Square. A wide variety of pies are made and for sale, said Commissioner Ed LeCompte

City Manager Tim Thornbury reported that the city is continuing to grow with the building boom of residential houses. He said that the public works department is now pouring concrete for pads and for picnic tables at The Kids Corner Park.

An ordinance was passed on first reading that will allow the city manager to directly authorize acquisitions without prior formal approval by the city commission. This will allow quick decisions for purchasing everyday police equipment from the state of Tennessee for the Red Bank Police Department. When it is posted, it is first come/first serve and is not available for long.

Another ordinance passed by the commissioners upgrades one that is already in place regarding how the city can deal with code violations related to abandoned and/or discarded vehicles, motor vehicles, boats, watercraft and trailers.

A vote approved an agreement with Right Way Cleaning for cleaning services for two municipal buildings - the new Red Bank City Hall and the Police Department. The price for the service is for an annual amount not to exceed $15,420.
