TSSAA Board Of Control Holds First Meeting Of 2020

Dates/Times Set For BlueCross Football Bowl Games

The TSSAA Board of Control met on Thursday, January 16 at the TSSAA office building in Hermitage.

The Board will approved financial reports in the sports of golf, volleyball, soccer, cross country, cheer and dance, and football.

East Nashville Magnet School and Hillsboro High School both appealed the sanctions placed on their boys’ basketball programs due to an incident that occurred during the contest between the two schools on December 6, 2019. Both schools’ boys’ basketball programs were placed on probation for a two-year period. The Board voted to deny the request of both schools to remove the probation.

The Board also voted to set the BlueCross Bowl schedule for 2020. The dates, times, and order of the games is as follows:

Thursday, December 3
11:00 a.m. – Division II-AA
3:00 p.m. – Division II-A
7:00 p.m. – Division II-AAA

Friday, December 4
11:00 a.m. – Division I, Class 3A
3:00 p.m. – Division I, Class 1A
7:00 p.m. – Division, Class 5A

Saturday, December 5
11:00 a.m. – Division I, Class 4A
3:00 p.m. – Division I, Class 2A
7:00 p.m. – Division I, Class 6A

Green Hill High School in Wilson County, which is scheduled to open next year, was approved for membership. It is a public school under the Wilson County Board of Education. They are scheduled to open with approximately 1200 students in grades 9-12. If approved, Green Hill will be placed in Division I, Class AAA, District 9 in basketball, baseball, and softball; Class AAA, District 9 in volleyball; Class AAA, District 9 in soccer; Large Class, Section 3 in cross country, track and field, golf, and tennis; Class AAA, Region 6 in wrestling; and District 12 in bowling.

Highland Rim Academy requested, and was approved, to rejoin TSSAA for cooperative purposes only. Highland Rim Academy is a small private school in Cookeville with approximately 30 students in grades 9-12. They were members previously but dropped out when the Legislative Council changed the cooperative program agreement language which only allows schools to form agreements within their Division. The Board granted them permission to seek an agreement with the closest public school.

12. The Board was provided an update regarding the Tennessee Sports Medicine Advisory Committee. 

13. Bradley Lambert, TSSAA Technology Director, provided the Board with a technology update. 

14. The Board voted to set the BlueCross Bowl Schedule for 2020.  The schedule is:

Their boys’ basketball program was placed on probation for two calendar years, resulting in a fine of $1000 due to an incident that occurred during the contest on December 6, 2019, against Hillsboro High School.  The school was also fined $250 due to the conduct of its fans.

18. The Board voted to deny the appeal from University School regarding sanctions placed on their soccer program.  The school requested the Board remove the restriction placed on their program that limited the number of scrimmages from four to two during the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons.                          

19. Approved Green Hill High School for TSSAA Membership.  The school is located in Wilson County and is scheduled to open next year.  It is a public school under the Wilson County Board of Education.  They are scheduled to open with approximately 1200 students in grades 9-12.  Green Hill will be placed in Division I, Class AAA, District 9 in basketball, baseball, and softball; Class AAA, District 9 in volleyball; Class AAA, District 9 in soccer; Large Class, Section 3 in cross country, track and field, golf, and tennis; Class AAA, Region 6 in wrestling; and District 12 in bowling.  There is no reason to assign a football region for Green Hill until after the 2020-2021 school year since it will be the last year of classification. 

20. The Board voted to allow Berean Christian School to form a cooperative agreement with Gibbs High School so that one student may finish her softball career there, where she has played the past two years.  Berean was also approved to form a cooperative agreement with a DII school in softball.
