Southern Lit Alliance announces applications are open for the Barnett Prize for Local Distinguished Author. The Barnett Prize is awarded annually to recognize the outstanding achievement of authors in the area and to raise awareness of their talent. "The award is offered through the generosity of Warren Barnett, art philanthropist and president of Barnett & Company, a firm offering personalized investment council in Chattanooga for 35 years," officials said.
Nominations for the Barnett Prize will be accepted through Feb. 28.
Authors must reside in Hamilton or the contiguous counties of Sequatchie, Marion, Rhea, Meigs or Bradley counties in Tennessee. Eligible Georgia authors must reside on Catoosa, Walker, or Dade counties.
Self-published works are not eligible for the award. For more information about the award, click here.
Authors, or their nominating agent, should submit an application, curriculum vitae and three copies of a completed, published work.

A three-judge panel whose members have demonstrated knowledge and expertise in the field of creative and published writing will choose the winner. The winning author must demonstrate a successful track record of publication in the genre of fiction, non-fiction, short story or poetry.
The winner will be announced as a part of the SouthWord literary festival on April 3 at noon at the University Center at UTC.
