Funeral Services Are Thursday For Gunned Down Brainerd Walmart Employee; Alfred Williams Is Hailed As Hero

Funeral services for the Brainerd Walmart employee and father of five who was caught in a crossfire and killed outside the store, will be Thursday.

Alfred James Williams, Sr., 61, was shot along with a man, 23, whose injuries were not life-threatening.

Activist Marie Mott told members of the City Council on Tuesday that Mr. Williams should be hailed as a hero.

She said he was on a break in an area between City Gear and Walmart when shooting broke out.

She said he pushed a woman out of the way and told her to run before being shot himself. He was reportedly shot three times. Police have said he was not a target of the shooter.

Mr. Williams was the son of LeRoy Williams, Sr. and Bernice Henderson Williams. He was also preceded in death by daughter, Bernice Williams, three sisters, Delaney Harris, Charlotte Cosby, and Della Darby, brother, LeRoy Williams, Jr., and Marvin Parker, Jr., and granddaughter, Innocence Houston.

He had married Kelli Marsh Williams, March 29, 1991, and they had five children, including Alfred Williams, Jr., Jessica Davis, Carl Williams, Sr., and Bryan Williams. Grandchildren are Anthony, Nasir, Disire, Kennedy, Lanice, and Carl Williams, Jr. He is also survived by sisters, Yvonne (Warren) Lemon, Deborah Moore and Annette (Maurice) Thompson; sister-in-law, Tara Marsh; nieces, nephews, cousins; close friends, Dorothy Wigfall, Angie Allen; and other relatives, and friends.

Funeral services will be Thursday at noon at Taylor Funeral Home, 3417 Wilcox Blvd., with Rev. Andrew Bullard, Jr. as eulogist. The family will receive friends at the Taylor Funeral Home one hour before the service.

Interment will be at Lake Wood Cemetery.

Arrangements were by Willis Funeral Home, Inc., Dalton, Ga.
