Lifelong Chattanoogan Was Co-Founder Of Kudzu Ball

Tilda Caldwell Wall, 91, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 13, 2020, at Hospice of Chattanooga.

She was born on Jan. 27, 1929, to the late Hollis M. and Tillie (Ragon) Caldwell. She was one of six children. She grew up on Lookout Mountain and lived most of her life in the Chattanooga area, with brief stops in New Jersey and North Carolina. On July 23, 1950 she married Junius French Wall in Chattanooga and he predeceased her on February 25, 1987.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and her brothers John Caldwell, Frank Caldwell and Key Caldwell, and sisters, Harriet Caldwell and Marion Caldwell.

Surviving are children Harriet (Brian) Hamilton, Marion Wall and French (Greg) Wall, grandchildren Laura Wall, Drew Hamilton, Nik Pope, Demetri Pope, Junius Pope and Gio Pope, her faithful cat Ernie, and a host of friends across generations.

She was an active member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church for over 50 years, where she sang in the choir and served on the Altar Guild. She continued to participate in church services and activities on the Internet until the end. She graduated from City High School and the University of Chattanooga in 1950 with a degree in chemistry. She was also a college tennis player. She was an information specialist at Chattem for over 20 years. She was a bridge player and avid traveler and enjoyed gardening. She was also a co-founder of the Kudzu Ball, a fundraiser for the March of Dimes held annually on the same day as Chattanooga’s Cotton Ball, and was Kudzu Queen. She was also a member of the Long Range, Way Down the Road, and Out of Sight Planning Commission. She was a long time docent at the Tennessee Aquarium. She was active until the end. She quit smoking at 80 but continued to exercise several times a week the Heart Institute, where she made many good friends.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to St. Peter’s Episcopal Church.
