Isis Cantrell is a first generation, low income student from Fort Oglethorpe, who was accepted into Barnard College of Columbia University. However, her family does not have the necessary resources to pay for her first year’s tuition, especially after her mother lost her job due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Not wanting to let go of her dream, Isis turned to GoFundMe to make it a reality.
"I want to go to college, get my bachelors and become a lawyer. I'll be able to repay my parents by taking care of them like they did for me.
I also want to use my law degree to give back to my community; throughout my life I have witnesses many injustices and I desperately hope to fix them through the legal system. Unfortunately I need help to get to that point," said Isis on the GoFundMe page.
Thanks to the community's generosity, Isis is almost at her goal and will be heading to Barnard this month.
According to a survey by OneClass, more than half, or 56 percent, of college students say they can no longer afford their tuition tab. Just about half of all undergraduates said they need to figure out a new way to pay for school because of the impact of the pandemic on their financial standing, the report found.
