Erika Kummer
Erika Kummer, 83, died on Valentine’s Day at home surrounded by family.
She was deeply loved by her late husband, Paul, her two children, three grandchildren and long-standing employees at Swiss Am Seasonings and Catering. Her work ethic, caring nature and authenticity are traits that characterized this amazing woman.
Erika was born in Southern Germany. Her childhood was full of outdoor adventure and skiing in the alps, and weekly family gatherings were made a celebration of. All this despite the shadow of hard times left by World War II. By age 20, after working at a photography and film studio while attending night school, she began documenting the local news as a successful photojournalist until her marriage at age 23. From there, she left all she knew to settle in America with Paul.
She first lived in Florida and Kentucky where her children were born. She then returned to Paul’s birthplace, Switzerland, before settling in the home they built on Lookout Mountain. From there they established Swiss Am Seasonings and Catering, which is now led by their son Peter Kummer. Their business kept her continuously inspired, and their home remained a loving and festive place.
We will remember Erika’s contagious laughter and deep strength the most. She did it all – she made the home, cooked beautiful food, nurtured her beloved garden, ran her business, took care of Paul, and never forgot to check in with loved ones. Family comprised every inch of her core, and she gave herself, willingly, every day to family.
Erika’s family express their deepest gratitude to the Hospice of Chattanooga, as well as the many loved ones who have sent their thoughts and prayers.
A celebration of life will take place at home on Lookout Mountain at a later date.
Arrangements are by Heritage Funeral Home & Crematory, 3239 Battlefield Parkway.
