Walker County Animal Shelter To Participate In Empty The Shelters Event May 1-15

  • Thursday, May 1, 2025
The Walker County Animal Shelter will join nearly 400 shelters across the country to offer reduced adoption fees during the BISSELL Pet Foundation Empty the Shelters event. This will be the first time WCAS has participated in the nationwide campaign to help pets find loving homes.

WCAS will waive adoption fees for cats and dogs over four months of age from May 1-15.

"The adoption fee for kittens and puppies will be reduced to just $25 thanks to the generous sponsorship of the BISSELL Pet Foundation," officials said.

A current roster of adoptable animals is available to view on the shelter’s page on the county’s website at walkercountyga.gov/residents/animal-shelter.

"Every time we host Empty the Shelters, it affirms the importance of this lifesaving program," said Cathy Bissell, founder of BISSELL Pet Foundation.
"During the two-week event in May, tens of thousands of pets of all kinds, many who've waited far too long, will find the loving homes they deserve. Empty the Shelters has created real momentum around adoption, helping our nation's overcrowded shelters save more lives. We are proud to keep expanding this life-changing effort and grateful to everyone who makes it possible by adopting or donating."

"We are honored to have been selected to participate in this impactful event in partnership with the BISSELL Pet Foundation,” said Melissa Smith, shelter director. “Our shelter is home to many wonderful animals who have been patiently waiting for their forever families. We are hopeful the Empty the Shelters adoption event will connect these deserving pets with loving, permanent homes.”

There are currently nearly 100 animals, including cats, dogs and even a pig, available for adoption at the WCAS. The shelter is located at 5488 North Marble Top Road, near Chickamauga, and is open Monday through Friday.

Officials said, "Since its inception in 2016, Empty the Shelters has helped more than 323,000 pets find loving homes and is now the largest funded adoption event in the country. The program partners with more than 815 animal welfare organizations across 49 states and Canada."
