Norbert "Norb" Kier died on February 15, 2023.

He was born in Neillsville, Wi., to the late Wera (Edens) and Donald Kier.

A native of Marshfield, Wi., Mr. Kier was a veteran, having served in the Army Security Agency as well as a stint in the National Guard. He earned his BA degree at Bryan College and an MEd at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, as well as course work at the University of Virginia. He began his teaching career in Virginia serving at Kenbridge High School and Colonial Heights High School, before moving to the Chattanooga area in 1963 to teach English at Soddy-Daisy High School.

His career took several turns including serving as an English teacher, as a Reading teacher, and as a guidance counselor, and culminated in serving as an elementary school principal at Signal Mountain Elementary and Soddy Elementary.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Bettye Smith Kier and his siblings: Bernard Kier of Marshfield WI, Alice Kier Cattanach of Madison, WI, Everett Kier of Ashland, VA, and Milton Kier of New Richmond, WI.

He is survived by his two sons: Stephen M. (Dr. Dianne Baynes) Kier of Burlington, VT; Chester A. (Karen) Kier of Soddy, TN; Grandchildren: April Tillery, Jeffrey (Kristen) Williams, and Jessica (Christian) Snow, and numerous great-grandchildren.

Mr. Kier’s remains will be interred at the Chattanooga National Cemetery this Spring. A graveside service will be held on Friday, April 21, at 1 p.m.
