Second Missionary Baptist Church will host a celebratory Black History Brunch on Saturday, Feb. 25, at the church. The 2023 theme is "Black Resistance . . . but Still I (We) Rise."
The program features middle and high school youth of the church in a chronological narrative of historical highlights creatively weaved throughout the infamous poem, "Still I Rise" by Maya Angelou, first published in 1978. The program promises to present a unique and thought-provoking perspective of milestone events that have an indelible mark on the history of a people, a country and a culture.
The brunch will be held in the McDaniel-Strickland Multipurpose Room at 11:30 a.m. with doors opening at 11 a.m. Tickets are available at the church office for $10 or through any member of the Club Eleven Ministry, chaired by Rev. Ronald Harris. All tickets are in-advance, with no tickets being sold at the door. African attire is encouraged but optional. In addition to gathering for an exciting, educational and inspirational afternoon, the event will give guests an opportunity for door prizes.
The church is at 2305 E. Third St., where the Rev. Dr. Ernest L. Reid, Jr., is senior pastor. For more information, please call the church during weekday office hours beginning at 9:30 a.m. at 423 624-9097 or email Ms. Mary Quarles, ticket chair, at secretary@mysmbchurch.org.
