Dr. Benjamin Waldorf
Dr. Benjamin Waldorf, Erlanger urologist, performed his first noninvasive Focal One Robotic High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) procedure for prostate cancer on Aug. 17.
"Erlanger Urology, a regional leader for prostate cancer and kidney-sparing surgeries, remains the first and only center in Tennessee to offer Focal One Robotic HIFU," officials said. "Focal One Robotic HIFU is the most advanced in precisely targeted removal of diseased prostate tissue for patients with localized cancer.
This technology combines real-time ultrasound image guidance with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and biopsy data presented in 3D. Using a probe, the doctor navigates to the tumor in real-time, directs high-speed ultrasound energy at the target area, and removes only the diseased portion of the prostate without any incisions.
"The fusion of these technologies enables urologists to establish more precise contours around the cancerous tumor than was possible in the past. Critically, they can then remove a smaller portion of the prostate, which lessens the damage to surrounding healthy tissue and minimizes the risk of side effects such as urinary incontinence and erectile dysfunction, commonly associated with radical prostatectomy and radiation."
Dr. Waldorf said, “Erlanger Urology continues to be a leader in state-of-the-art prostate cancer care. We are proud of the work we do and are always looking for advancements to provide the best outcomes and quality of life for our patients.”
The first HIFU surgery in the state was performed by Erlanger Urologist Dr. Amar Singh in May of this year. For more information about the Robotic HIFU procedure or to make an appointment, visit erlanger.org/HIFU.
