Roderick "Rod" Charles Payne entered this world on January 11, 1955, in Hamilton County, Tennessee, the cherished son of Sara L. Acklin Pettus and Jesse H. Payne. He was the second eldest among four siblings, one of whom preceded him in death.

Rod embarked on his educational journey within the Detroit Public School system, amassing a diverse array of accomplishments. His academic pursuits ranged from a Certificate of General Education to certifications in Nursing Assistance, Business Administration, and graduation from Chattanooga Barber College. His passion for understanding the human psyche led him to major in Psychology, and he also earned distinctions as a Nursing Assistant and Christian Counselor. Rod's multifaceted talents extended to the realm of Cosmetology.

In the spiritual realm, Rod discovered his calling when he accepted Christ and was ordained as a minister at Tried Stone Baptist Church in Detroit, Michigan. He dedicated his heart and time to working with youth and later served as an associate pastor in various Detroit churches. Rod's unwavering faith led him to found Abundant Faith, later renamed Victory Life, where he served faithfully for eight years.

After four decades away, Rod returned to his roots in Chattanooga, where he continued to bless the lives of others. Throughout his life, Rod wore many hats, including restaurant management at establishments such as Long John Silver and Ponderosa. His entrepreneurial spirit thrived as a minister, tax preparer, barber school operator, and chef. For several years, he shared his expertise with Liberty Tax and H.R. Block. Rod's dedication to his faith was evident as Elder Roderick Payne at New Philadelphia Missionary Baptist Church where he served as associate minister under Senior Pastor Brenda Millsaps.

In addition to his many roles and achievements, Rod was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Deborah. He cherished his children and family, who affectionately called him "dad," "daddy," and "grandad." Rod's love for the Lord shone brightly, and he found great joy in cooking for others and celebrating his birthday in the company of loved ones.

On Saturday, September 16, 2023, Roderick Charles Payne completed his earthly journey and transitioned to Ggory. He was preceded in death by his father, Jesse Payne; his mother, Sara Acklin Pettus; his grandmothers, Hazel Griffin and Edna Payne; his brother, Lavern Payne, and his bonus son, Demond Haynes.

Rod's memory lives on in the hearts of those who love him dearly, including his devoted wife, Deborah Payne, his six children: Tamika Payne, Christopher Payne, Danielle June (Don), Sharmika Caison, Jessica Franklin, and Ashley Payne. He also leaves behind fifteen cherished grandchildren: Elon, ErieAuna, Chris Jr., Kevin, Khristin, Kolin, Konnor, Kameron, Sebastian, Geion, Truett, Isaiah, Elijah, Leilah, and Ezra. Rod is survived by two sisters, Wendolyn Troupe (Charles) and Brinita Hogg (William), as well as his nephew, Clinton, and his childhood best friend, Louis White Sr.; his goddaughter, Tracy Ellis, and numerous nephews, nieces, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends also hold him dear in their hearts.

Rod's legacy of love, faith, and service will continue to inspire all those who had the privilege of knowing him.

Public viewing will be held from 2-6 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 27, at the funeral home.

A 1 p.m. funeral service will be held on Thursday, Sept. 28, at the New Philadelphia Missionary Baptist Church, 3708 Dodds Ave.

Interment will take place at Lakewood Memory Gardens South.
