The Salvation Army Calls For Christmas Volunteers Early As Economic Challenges Drive Increased Need

  • Tuesday, October 29, 2024
The Salvation Army of Greater Chattanooga is launching its volunteer recruitment for the Red Kettle Campaign earlier this year, driven by the growing needs in the community. Bellringing in the Chattanooga area begins on Nov. 22.

Officials said, "With the continued high costs of rent, utilities, groceries and gas, The Salvation Army is seeing a record number of requests for assistance. This year, we need more volunteers than ever to ensure we can meet the needs of those struggling during the holiday season.

"The Red Kettle Campaign, a cherished holiday tradition since 1891, is one of The Salvation Army’s most recognized fundraising programs.
Every year, from Thanksgiving through Christmas Eve, thousands of red kettles and volunteer bellringers are stationed outside storefronts and shopping centers across the nation, collecting donations that make a big impact on local communities.

"In addition to bellringers, The Salvation Army also urgently needs volunteers for other crucial roles. This includes Angel Tree volunteers to sort, organize, and distribute gifts to children and families in need, as well as drivers to transport items during the season. These roles are vital in ensuring that every family receives the support and joy they need during the holidays.

"The funds raised through the Red Kettle Campaign support a wide range of programs and services, including providing warm meals to the hungry, offering shelter to those experiencing homelessness, supplying clothing and essential items to those in crisis, and giving holiday assistance to families in need."

“With the rising cost of living, more families in our community are turning to us for help,” said Major Douglas McClure of The Salvation Army of Chattanooga. “Our Red Kettle Campaign is a symbol of hope during the holiday season, and it’s more critical than ever this year. Volunteers are the lifeblood of this campaign, and we are immensely grateful for their dedication and compassion.”

The local Salvation Army unit has set a goal of recruiting 500 volunteer bellringers this season.

Officials said, "Volunteering is easy, and individuals can choose from a variety of roles to fit their schedules. Bellringers can do as many two-hour shifts as they like, whether it’s just one or several. Angel Tree volunteers and drivers are also needed throughout the season. You can volunteer by yourself, with your family or even as part of a church group. To become a volunteer and join The Salvation Army in making a difference this holiday season, please visit our website at www.csarmy.org or call 423-756-1023.

"Join us in spreading holiday cheer and making a positive impact on the lives of our neighbors in need here in Greater Chattanooga. Together, we can bring hope to our community and create lasting change."
