The Covenant women's basketball team had its first road test of the year on Thursday night at Welch. The Scots passed the test, defeating the Flames 64-50 by double-digits to get back in the win column.
Inside the first 90 seconds, Breezy Savage scored two layups to put Covenant in front 4-0.
Midway through the quarter, Welch tied the game with a made 3-pointer.
Emma Kaye Fuller knocked down a jumper for Covenant's final basket of the quarter as it led 16-13.
A triple by Savage followed by a couple of made free throws by Lucy Benson extended the lead to 21-15. 3-pointers from Cair Canady and Benson kept the Scots in front 29-22.
Later in the quarter Benson and Hannah Eidson hit 3-pointers as Covenant led 35-28 at the break.
The Flames used a 7-0 scoring run to cut the Scots' lead to two points.
A 6-0 Covenant run capped off by another basket from Benson put the lead back at seven points with 1:04 remaining. Welch scored the final points of the quarter as it trailed 49-44.
In the most important stretch of the game, Covenant started the fourth quarter on a 13-0 run to move ahead 62-44. In total, Covenant outscored Welch 15-6 in the final frame to secure the double-digit victory.
Covenant moves to 1-0 all-time against Welch. Benson led the Scots with a career-high 23 points on 9-of-13 shooting. Savage was also in double-figures with 15 points. Abby Witt scored nine points and was active on the glass with eight rebounds. As a team, Covenant was 45.5% (25-55) shooting and 42.1% (8-19) from behind the 3-point line while Welch was 34% (18-53) and 25% (5-20) in the same categories. Covenant outrebounded Welch 38-28.
