After 11 seasons leading the Ridgeland High School softball program, Coach Richie Wood has announced he will step down from his position as head coach. Coach Wood took over the program in 2013 and leaves behind a legacy of success, dedication, and player development that has made a lasting impact on the school and the community.
During his tenure, Coach Wood led the Ridgeland Panthers to six state playoff appearances, including remarkable runs to the Sweet 16 in both 2013 and 2015, and the Elite 8 in 2016. Under his leadership, the Panthers claimed two region championships and a runner-up finish, showcasing Wood’s ability to build competitive, resilient teams year after year.
Coach Wood’s impact is not only reflected in the team's on-field accomplishments but also in the individual success of his players. Four athletes earned all-state honors under his leadership, and 15 players went on to continue their softball careers at the collegiate level, a testament to Wood’s commitment to developing young talent and preparing them for future success.
Coach Wood's decision to step down marks the end of an era for Ridgeland High School softball. The school and athletic department are currently in the process of selecting a successor to continue building on the strong foundation laid by Coach Wood.
